This autumn, Tate Modern invites Londoners—and culturally curious travellers—to linger longer. From 26 September 2025, the gallery will now stay open until 9 pm every Friday and Saturday, adding a twilight dimension to its already vibrant artistic offerings.

Why Now? A Youth-Driven Shift in Gallery Hours

This decision follows an extraordinary surge of young visitors during Tate Modern’s 25th Birthday Weekender in May, where over 76,000 people explored the galleries across three days—70% of whom were aged under 35. That turnout underscores a clear demand for cultural spaces that align with modern lifestyles.

Tate Modern Lates: Proven Popularity Fuels Permanent Change

Since 2016, the Tate Modern Lates series—curated, after-hours events featuring talks, music, workshops, films, and more—has drawn more than 750,000 attendees. In particular, a highlight came last summer when Little Simz guest‑curated an event, attracting a record 18,500 visitors in one evening.

By instituting regular late openings, Tate Modern is effectively bringing the spirit of Lates into the weekend rhythm—not confining it to a single monthly event, but inviting exploration every Friday and Saturday evening.

City Leaders Champion Night-Time Culture

Gallery director Karin Hindsbo notes that the Lates have become “a cornerstone of London’s nightlife,” fulfilling a long‑overlooked demand among younger urbanites to engage with culture after work. Meanwhile, Mayor Sadiq Khan praised the initiative, affirming that it strengthens London’s status as “the cultural capital of the world” with unmatched nightlife—and boosts the city’s evening economy.

Deputy Mayor for Culture Justine Simons OBE echoed the enthusiasm, celebrating the move as “brilliant news” that allows Londoners to experience world-class art every weekend night.

What’s On: What to Expect from the Late-Night Tate

Extended free entry to the permanent collection, now until 9 pm on weekends.

The monthly Tate Modern Lates will continue with their full roster of creative and social programming at the end of each month.

Inspired by the Lates’ success, visitors can expect art, music, and conversation woven into the weekend fabric—making Tate Modern an after-work destination as much as a daytime landmark.
